Description

Whenever or wherever there are people, there are communications, especially in this age of advanced science and technology and unprecedented extension of interaction and transportation. As we look at, and around ourselves, communications are at work all the time. Therefore, it is more important than ever to study how humans understand and implement communications and the resulting far-reaching influences. An Asiacentric school of communication theories is emerging in the world and growing. Although we cannot say that it is playing the leading role in international communication theories, its influence is becoming increasingly significant. The Asiacentric school of communication theories has produced multiple and complex perspectives, new conceptions, incisive analyses, and broad theoretical frameworks. Their effects will undoubtedly impact existing western theories (e.g., Chen, 2004, 2006, 2007; Chen & Starosta, 2003; Chen, & Miike, [Eds.] 2003; Dissanayake, 1988, 2003, 2006, 2007; Gordon, 2007a; 2007b; Gunaratne, 2007; Ishii, 1997, 2006, 2007; Jung, 2001; Kim, 2002; Kincaid,1987; Lee, 2007; Miike,2004, 2007a, 2007b; Mowlana,2007; Okabe,1983, 2007; Pfahl, Chomngam & Hale, 2007; Starosta, 2006; Starosta & Shi, 2007; Yum, 1988, 2007). The topics, concepts and models of this school reflect the different dimensions of Asiacentric communication theories. They enrich and broaden the discourse on the transformation of multi-cultures and multi-strategies, and make us more aware of contemporary social problems. In the context of globalization, they further promote our cultural self-consciousness, deepen our thoughts on nationalism, and help to resolve the problem of cultural identity. All of these deserve our close attention. The writer cannot even hope to cover all the aspects of this wide field. However, she will, in what follows, consider it from a perspective of crossing thoughts of postmodernism, post-Americanism and Fu-bian. Postmodern and Post-American Thoughts
